Funny thing about the planned aluminum tariff is that it is trying to prop up an industry that simply has no comparative advantage.
The price of everything with aluminum will go up, making your aluminum products less attractive in international markets low cost producers can sell into. If you don't want to trade and absorb everything domestically, that is fine....now say aluminum foil and aluminum products goes up 40% Everyone who imports aluminum foil or products made with aluminum into the US automatically is able to charge more and profit more. You can then implement tariffs on those products and escalate....but it would be b etter if those companies simply jacked up prices and kept the tariff amount as profit Balance of payments improvement one way is offset elsewhere in a value added product Simple example...but
