You and I only know what the media feeds us. All politicians lie. All major newscasters are paid well, to propagandize for the sake of targeted biased markets.
The takeaway is that we can't ever be sure of what the truth is. We can only be sure of what someone said that it is.

But now, it may be that the tariffs are imbalanced too one-sidedly in favor of Canada. I don't know whether they are or not.
Treaties between nations are good only so long as people act in accordance with them. They often stop.
There were treaties between the West and Ukraine, the West an Russia, Russia and Ukraine...but they were all violated and nullified.

In this case, Trump decided that the trade relations were unfair and he wants the tariffs to be equal for both nations. Reciprocal.
