It's weird... I get multiple spams per day from folks asking me to sign up for "myspace" lists. It's probably now the biggest source of spam annoyance on the web these days, at least for me. I am surprised to see so many folks on it. Because of the volume of them I get, I generally delete all of them on site now.

There's an "invite your friends" function on myspace that requires the user to insert an e-mail address which will generate the mail your receiving. I've never used that precisely because of what you're talking about. I'd send a friend a regular e-mail from my own account before I'd have them receive a myspace junkmail letter. But since there are 25,000 folks receiving e-mail from you on a regular basis and musicians use myspace as a promotional mailing tool, I'm not surprised more than a few of them have sent you a myspace request asking you to add yourself to their lists. For corresponding with other folks already on myspace, its extremely convenient. I can sort through "my friends" based on their location and let the ones local to a show receive an invite to an event. That invite only appears within myspace when they log in unless they have requested myspace send e-mail notification when they set up their page. For some reason - I think they use a better compression protocol or maybe there servers are just more efficient - the streamed mp3's from myspace sound cleaner on my computer than those on songramp or soundclick. ------------------ Marty my new home If you look at the glass and see it as half full, drink up! Brian,
Believe it or not, but myspace.com has become widely popular. Especially in the music circles....
However, I noticed that myspace.com is used mainly by people in their teens and twenties, also by bands.
Since I am a guy in my twenties, I have found myspace.com to be quite resourceful.
If you don't sign up for myspace, that's fine. It is definitely a voluntary thing to do. I just tend to like it personally.

Well, just keep in mind that these sites are just huge marketing harvesting companies driven by people doing exactly what many of our members have done: inserted their personal email lists to these companies have a "righteous" way to spam you. They think that you'll blame the person and not the company for adding you to the spam list. Of course Soundclick and Songramp and others are often full of spyware and similar tactics. But myspace has been more successful getting people to do their spam work for them by putting their recognizable email addresses/names on the spam emails. I assure you that all the responses are compiled (i.e. which email addresses are valid, which ones respond, which ones delete) and then sold for a zillion dollars to other mass marketing spammers/companies. I just choose not to participate in this very transparent spam job.

I'm on MySpace here: http://www.myspace.com/scottandrewrawks ...but I NEVER EVER use MySpace to invite people to join. I ONLY contact people who are already MySpace members. The reason: I feel that if you're already a member, you've basically opted-in to getting "be my friend!" requests, even from strangers. MySpace can be very cool. It can be helpful, for instance, to search and find all MySpace members within a certain ZIP code that enjoy the Dave Matthews Band and send them a "friend request" -- hey, you like DMB, I like DMB, maybe you'll like my stuff too!" Basically, you can very specifically identify a group of potential fans, who've willingly put this info out there in the MySpace system to find. I've heard of no-name bands that are able to pull in a decent crowd when they place a strange city for the first time, thanks to MySpace connections. But I would NEVER use MySpace to spam people outside of MySpace. That ain't cool. ------------------ Scott Andrew Lo-fi acoustic pop superhero! http://www.scottandrew.com/music

As has been discussed here already, I never use myspace to contact a friend outside of the system. It's not a cool thing to do for that very reason. Fortunately, I've never had a friend attempt to do that to me either. However, I am making much greater use of it with the searching and adding friend thing. There's lots of non-musicians that are very receptive to hearing new music there and it can substantially drive new traffic to your official website. Working on really getting targeted fan bases in places I'll be playing is my next goal. I gotta wonder if Tom, the face behind myspace was actually a musician that started this. I've heard that myspace sponsored music events are beginning to draw huge crowds. Jody ------------------ Music That Makes Your Soul Happy! www.jodywhitesides.com

Jessica is on myspace and the results have been awesome! She converted from a personal profile to a band profile just 7 weeks ago and has been getting several hundred listens a day! What a great way to share music. In addition she has been approached by several Indie Labels and gotten requests from a record label and a production company for her demo packet. Plus she was asked to sing the vocals in a movie and met several people in the business who have advised her! DJ's who want to play her songs and more. Its just been amazing. Her addy is http://www.myspace.com/jessicamellott Please add her! Lee

colleen - I think those scrolling colleen loys are preventing you from getting additional friend add requests and messages on myspace. Your signature above combines both urls into one so that they don't work. A little editing required. ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

I LOVE MYSPACE! I have Been on Myspace for quite some time now and NEVER received one spam e-mail at all. I personally think MYSPACE Music is the 'Best' musical Networking and Forum for actively working & Recording artists & musicians there is online. From top quality recordings to acoustic versions, myspace supports it! With a traffic number of over 7 million, you are potentially not only networking with other musicians ect but also interacting with the public and 'kids' that buy your music. As Indie Artist's you must build a following yourself online to compete for listeners and this program is a perfect tool for any serious musician to extend their fan/networking base. My Cd sales have hugely increased and I have done collaborations through being a member as well and also now released Ring Tones, for 2 of my songs, Sold in the States, through a contact I met on Myspace. The Streaming MP3 player of your music is quick and instant, with no hassle of downloading music and a great way to have a Website to showcase your music, without the large expense of hiring website design ect. Myspace also have it's own Music Label now, with the first album released and all artist's have been acquired FROM being members of Myspace Music. It is also a popular way for A&R to check out people also these days. What does anyone have to loose? I think ANY program that benefits the Indie artists in getting out there more and is not charging FEES to give you nothing, is defiantly a BONUS for us all. It is up to you how much effort you put into making your self known, or simply use it is a great place to send people to sample your tunes! GO THE INDIES!!! www.myspace.com/kitanamahoney ------------------ Those that try....Succeed!
