You don't need to be a writer to know that a book called "1980s...Countdown to Armageddon" might contain dubious information.
1st Corinthians 1:18-2:5 is a good passage as to the simplicity of what Paul preached. "Christ, and him crucified."
You can read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) In about 20 minutes. Most of the New Testament letters can be read in less than half an hour. Galatians focuses on salvation by faith rather than works of law. Peter's letters are mostly about Christian living. Counsel for the family, obeying the government, looking forward to the heavenly reward.
They can be a little daunting if you're unfamiliar with ancient customs but the message is clear. I don't know why but Hobby Lobby has excellent prices on Bibles. You can get an English Standard Version study Bible for $30. It has copious footnotes and is an outstanding resource. I got mine for $20 but the price went up.
You can be offended by what I said, especially if you like Lindsay's books. That wasn't my intention. It's more important that honest people know the Bible doesn't support what most religious leaders say, or how many of them behave.
