Long before I heard the term "slowhand" I had a great drummer, a kid I grew up with, his name was Nick Morrone.
Nick was self-taught and consequently did everything "wrong"..
Held the sticks wrong, had the high hat on the wrong side of the drums etc......
He couldn't do a roll or any of that stuff, but what a pocket..he would lag just enough behind to create the groove of doom !
Anyway, when talking about his abilities we'd always say "Well, he's not real flashy...but Man is he SLOW !"

that's intersting about the "court" musicians..
I always had the image of a bunch of traveling charlatans, living by their wits and stealing food from the livestock.
