Bob, police and fireman and teachers are paid wage to perform services deemed necessary by governmental entities with tax-levying (and RAISING!) authority. Songwriters are not. So they organized ASCAP. A Chicago guy oughta understand, if not agree, with people organizing to get paid for their labor and improve their lot in life. Was that greed? Or perhaps you're not as left-wing bleeding-heart as you told me? If not for some songs (NOT all, I know) that others have written that you used to start the new family into a house and a car, you'd have started your career doing either stand-up or mime. Juggling? Prestidigitation? Unless you could drum up an audience with rhythmic log thumping and chanting. And to all a good night!
