Maybe I don't have all the facts, but it's my understanding that you only have to buy the ASCAP/BMI licenses when you play COVER tunes: tunes written by someone other than the performer. If you are hosting artists who play their own ORIGINAL music, you don't have to purchase the license. Hallenbecks here in L.A., where we've held dozens of JPF showcases, has a sign up - very visible on stage - that clearly states "NO COVER TUNES". I've assumed it's specifically for the purpose of avoiding license fees. The above law suit in San Francisco does sound like a bunch of BS, and ASCAP has other problems as well as this mafia-like approach to public relations. ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com

"Defeatist Pessimists and Rose Colored Glasses Optimists are lonely companions, victims even. Both ideologies imply predestined outcomes, and therefore breed inactivity in its victims. Inaction is the only sure way to lose at anything in life. All positive action guarantees at least a fighting chance." -Brian Austin Whitney
