Currently the big wrong is you are not reading it right.
The artist (that's you Cobber)does not have to pay.
You do your sets whatever they were considering you don't use a "We're going to play these tonight Guys" thing.
When you have recoverd from the gig and Mary isn't after you to mow the lwan, you take your pick of BMI or ASCAP, you being a member of both, and log onto the website and type in your play list (as best as you can remember it would be better than nothing. Titles, Writer Credit and their PRO and the venue and date and away you send it.
The recipricols twix the PROs do all the share it out stuff.
All seems pretty simple to me.
