Bob, you don't owe ChannelLock® man because he didn't negotiate a deal with YOU. For all you know, he gets paid by the company that makes 'em for every one sold, if he haggled it. Happens thousands of times a day for myriad products. Call it commission, override, extortion, whatever.

The Congress determined that artistic works have a higher intrinsic value than other products of human effort. I don't owe Levi Strauss for every time I wear their jeans to work, 'cause they are an easily replicable commodity.

Good entertaining songs are not, and thus are accorded special status and deemed recompensible on multiple and separate occasions for their use, to sustain the 'inventor' and nurture the production of more such works.

If it was easy, I could do it! And when I do, I expect to make a fine walletful.

I'm not ashamed of being a capitalist. If you're leaving money on the table, you're only enabling and feeding someone else's greed, which then evolves into their sense of entitlement to your rightful share. That hurts both writer AND performer. Ed Bertrand
