I think they realized it wasn't the big money maker they thought it could be... now they can still pick the exact same songs they would have anyway and not spend so much money on the contest which probably cost as much as they made and more. (Since they wasted tv screen time mentioning it and they can do better promoting more major label artists who pay them for performance slots and to promote their movies...)
