My recap of Top 11 (country week):
First of all, they should hire real Nashville musicians to do Nashville night, not just a harp and steel player to add a flavor of country. The bass player, drummer, and guitarist were not convincing (especially the bass player) in that style at all - very disappointed in the sound of the band playing country.
1. Michael Sarver - 6; Ain't Goin' Down 'til the Sun Comes Up; boring, boring, boring. So he remembered all 2000 words or whatever. It wasn't a memorable performance at all. He sounded Karaoke to me. He is at the bottom of the list, IMHO.
2. Allison Ireheta - 8; Blame It On Your Heart; I like this girl. She's spunky and an amazing singer for 16 years old. I think the band really s***ked on the arrangement so didn't do her any favors, but vocally, I think she did a very respectable job. I hope she's popular enough to be safe.
3. Kris Allen; 9; To Make You Feel My Love; This was a very good performance. Just something about his facial expressions bugs me...I think he's safe for now.
4. Lil Round; 8; Independance Day; No Simon..."Lil" is NOT always a contraction of "little"...it could be Lillian, Lily, or liliputian! I think it was an OK performance, but not Idol quality. She's safe for this week.
5. Adam Lambert; 10; Ring of Fire; Although Johnny Cash may have been writhing in his grave, I think the guy took a big risk and pulled off a "Led Zepplin" version of this. A younger Robert Plant would have been proud. I think the teens will go for him. He's definitely safe.
6. Scott MacIntyre; 7; Wild Angels; His pitch is fine; he's just doing the same thing every week, and it's not all that good. He went out of his way to make a smokin' country tune boring. He may not go this week, but I hope he goes soon. At this point, I'd rather see him go than anyone else. He's simply not an idol.
7. Alexis Grace - 7; Jolene; It was simply ok. I think she pushed Dolly classic "bluegrassy" song too far in the blues direction, but she's a cute girl with a decent set of pipes, and I hope she's around for a few more weeks. I'm kind of getting the feeling she may not have the staying power though - we'll see.
8. Danny Gokey - 9; Jesus Take the Wheel; Who'd have figured a guy could pull that song off. He did a great job. The man is a real contender for the #1 spot; he'll definitely be in the finals.
9. Anoop Desai - 10; Always On My Mind; no one could believe the transition; even Simon said "from Zero to Hero" and took back his statement that Anoop didn't belong in the top 13. The man made the song his own and pulled me right into his rendition. This is the voice I thought he demonstrated during Hollywood week, but screwed up last week. He's definitely safe for now.
10. Megan Joy - 9; After Midnight; props to Megan for performing with the flu (she had been in the hospital for it). I gave her an extra point for that because her performance was only an 8. She lost some of her quirkiness (maybe due to the flu), but I think she's safe this week.
11. Matt Giraud - 10; So Small; solid performance; He's not exactly my cup of tea, but I can respect his musicianship and that he's another real contender for the Finale. He reminds me of Billy Joel, who also was never my cup of tea, but an icon in the industry.
My Top 3 from last night's performance:
1. Anoop Desai 2. Matt Giraud 3. Danny Gokey (honorable mention of Adam Lambert for uniqueness)
Bottom 3, IMHO:
1. Michael Sarver 2. Scott MacIntyre 3. Alexis Grace
Who will America vote off?
Alexis or Allison
