Truman, Actually, you're correct about my birth date. I was hatched in 1963. However, while I may have cut my teeth as a bassist on Zep, Rush, Yes and the like, today my music collection and tastes range from the aforementioned bands, to James Taylor, Jewel, Gillian Welch, Soul Asylum, Counting Crows, Blue Rodeo, Paul Westerberg, Pete Townshend, Miles Davis, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Jaco Pastorius etc... lots of diversity. I just like good music (my opinion of what good music is may vary from yours of course!) of all genres. Except for fabricated, lip synching, popstar crap. Just some thoughts... But, it's not so much that I dislike contemporary music as it is the fact that the music industry that puts together "assembly line" pop acts, and tries to pass them off as "artists". I'm a big fan of anyone, regardless of musical genre, who pays their dues. Most acts nowadays are put together or signed off a demo and have to learn how to perform through choreographed dance routines etc... The last band that I can truly think of in this last decade or so that has done it the way I was brought up musically, is Dave Matthews Band. They played countless bar gigs, built a following, put out a couple of indie CD's and became a "band" together. They have longevity, they are continually developing and growing. That's the element that is so drastically missing and has been missing for a very long time from the music industry. Like our society, music has to be "instant" not only for the industry, but for the listener as well. No one wants to think anymore. Our society loves celebrity, yet frowns upon the artistic people of our world as "bohemians". Sad but true.
