The 13th Pew
© 2004 Greg C. Brown

When the preacher asked, "Do you take this woman?"
I knew he wouldn't hesitate.
His bold reply still lingers in my head
Like the pain of a bad toothache.
It could've been ME standing at the altar
Telling everybody "I do".
But a fool learns slow and I soon found myself
Just a guest in the thirteenth pew.

CHORUS
The church bells rang out the Wedding March
As an empty hole swallowed up my heart.
Then the preacher said “Now you're man and wife;
You may kiss the bride, and let's throw some rice.”
That’s what it all finally came down to,
And I was just a guest in the 13th pew.

With the friends of the bride, I sat feeling queasy,
A pool of sweat was in my hands.
My stomach ached and I began to squirm
When they both traded wedding bands.
Then the choir began to sing a sweet tribute,
And tears of joy were falling too.
But the tears I shed were of a different kind
From a guest in the thirteenth pew.

REPEAT CHORUS
The church bells rang out the Wedding March…

With the scriptures read, and the choir done singing
How Great Thou Art and Oh Promise Me,
The preacher asked if anyone objected,
Better speak now or hold your piece.
I had to bite my tongue to keep from shouting,
My only chance to say I do.
’Cause I sure objected to sitting in the back
As a guest in the thirteenth pew.

BRIDGE
I suppose I oughta be grateful,
At least I got an invitation.
But it sure was hard to be the ex-lover
And join in the celebration.

REPEAT CHORUS
The church bells rang out the Wedding March…

Yeah, that’s what it all finally came down to…
I was just a guest in the 13th pew.
