Unemployment Line
by Laura Warfield
c.2006

Unemployment line I’m number nine and it’s movin’ mighty slow
But the folks behind say never there ain’t no place to go
I’m number eight, gee I hate to wait wish I could disappear
I do regret I’m deep in debt on another election year

Chorus
Spending my time on the Unemployment Line

I’m number seven, I say earth’s no heaven if we can’t all share the wealth
The rich get richer and the sick get sicker, what happened to that national health?
Now I’m number six and I’m in a fix I can’t even pay my rent
When the people with money in this land of honey make up a mighty 2%

Chorus

I got downsized says number five, a computer ate my job
Me and my whole division, gonna find some banks to rob
Says, it’s only a joke, wish he could smoke, mumbles as he chews his gum
Better get it together or we’ll never be first in the second millennium

Chorus

I’m number four getting’ near the door thinkin’ I don’t have a voice
I’m a flower child in a world gone wild I don’t even have a choice
We throw a token to AIDS in the purple haze of advanced technology
And live on the street with nothin’ to eat in a booming economy

Chorus

Now I’m third in line and it’s way past nine, gotta get down to the school
See my kid in a play called “Labor Day” all about the Golden Rule
And I’m number two don’t know what to do, guess I’ll have to go retrain
Get some other work from some other jerk who thinks I have half of a brain

Chorus

The time has passed and I’m here at last, thinking about my bills
All the ones I’ve paid, all the debts I’ve made, oh, all those worldly ills
Well they stamp my card n’ it’s sure getting’ hard, but I just hope and pray
They won’t compromise on our childrens’ lives this next Election Day

Chorus
