EYES (The Roman Soldier’s Wife)
by Nancy Krebs
©1998

I am a soldier’s wife sent from Rome.
My husband’s life has kept us far from our home.
He’s done these crucifixions before.
But as he often tells me “what’s one more?”

There must be something odd about this day.
So many people crowd along the way.
Their faces hold a multitude of fears.
Some look angry, others are in tears.

But in their eyes, just a glint of hatred
in their eyes; something cold and dead;
just a look of contempt and a sneer
for the one who is condemned, drawing near.

I see her as he struggles up the hill.
His face a mask of pain, it gives this woman a chill.
She longs to help him, but she’s not allowed.
My husband holds her back against the crowd.

But in her eyes, a wealth of deep emotion
in her eyes; a sweet and true devotion.
Just a look, so tender and so dear;
the condemned must be her son drawing near.

They throw him down, the nails are driven in.
Such agony, as they pierce his skin.
They hoist and pull the cross up into place.
Then and only then I truly see his face.

And in his eyes, not a hint of hatred
in his eyes; only something sacred;
forgiveness, and compassion all too clear
for those of us gathered here.

Yes, in his eyes, there is such a story
in his eyes; a glimpse of future glory.
Who is this man with love in place of fear?
Could he be who he says he is, dying here?
He looks at me and pain cannot disguise....
I see the Son of God.....in His eyes!
