Some of y'all have already heard the living-room-webcam-three-days-after-we-wrote-it version. Here's the studio treatment. Same players as on "(I Got My Heart) Broke In"...except no fiddles, the piano player added B3, and the lead guitarist switched from a Telecaster to a Les Paul. NOT IN MY BACKYARD (Kurt Fortmeyer/Neal Guinane) Dad Zone Music ASCAPI hear tell they think they're doing well Up on Wall Street in New York But that's so not the view I've got Out here on my porch Dog's running rabbits through the weeds Growing up around a truck that hasn't cranked in days I'm not sweating at no factory job I'm just sitting up here in the shade I've got no reason for leaving here anyway It don't matter if that truck won't start Somebody somewhere is making hay Just not in my backyard They closed the textile mills in Caroline And the steel mills in PA You'll only get connected to some Indian guy If you pick up the phone to complain Big boxes killed off the Mom & Pops China owns the American Dream The King of Beers belongs to Denmark now There ain't no local economy I've got no reason for leaving here anyway It don't matter if that truck won't start Somebody somewhere is making hay Just not in my backyard How they sleep at night the devil knows And he sent my job off to Mexico I hear the money's good if you're a CEO But a working man's got nowhere to go I've got no reason for leaving here anyway It don't matter if that truck won't start Somebody somewhere is making hay Just not in my backyard Yeah somebody somewhere is making hay Just not in my backyard

Hi Kurt...
You have a real nice line up of musicians on this...and it shows. Great song and a real nice studio cut. the lyric really resona5ted with me...lots of good lin e4s in there!
RFor what it;s worth, i'm originally from St. louis...The King of Beers was actually bought by In-Bev...they're from Belgium, not Denmark. Just thought pass that on, if it makes any difference. St. Louis Cardinals and budweiser are second religions up there!
Loved it! Can't find a thing to complain about musically or vocally. ASnd the production was top-notch! Good luck with it!

Al Whoops! I guess I should have done my homework instead of counting on my faulty memory of a news story I read somewhere. Now I have to decide if it bothers me enough to spend time and money changing it. Thanks for the heads-up...and for the kind words.

Hi Kurt Another good 'un, with a proper band too. Until the chorus I was thinking Steve Earle and was expecting to hear the sighs in between lines. Then it was country. I like it. Vic

Vic Funny you should mention Steve Earle. My young co-writer was mostly unfamiliar with him, so I was giving him homework to do...listen to Steve Earle and Tom Russell. The song ended up sounding more like Jimmy Buffett than I had anticipated, but I can live with that. I remember when Steve Earle was country. Thanks for listening!

Best of luck with this, man!

Best of luck with this, man! Thanks, Tony! I've already had a handful of stations pick this up for airplay...in Canada, Australia, and the USA. I hope to have a new album (including this song) ready for release in January.

Sounds great, Kurt. I remember liking the "unplugged" version but this really kicks.

Stevie There's something about using pro level players that makes my songs sound so much better than when I play them by myself. I am blessed to have hooked up with these guys.

Hi Kurt.
I didn't hear the original version--but can only say congrats! This is really produced/performed/arranged brilliantly! Cool lyrical concept, with a great foundation melody that grabs you quickly.
I especially liked how this chorus just lifts so "smoothly." Nice write man!

Al Hi Al, This has bugged the dookie balls out of me ever since you brought it up. I should have done my homework. Well, we can both rest easy now because I changed it yesterday before mastering the new CD. It was a relatively easy fix (easier than finding a Danish company to buy out In-Bev) and now I can stop beating myself up about it. Thanks for the catch. Kurt P.S. Maybe I can get some airplay in St. Louis now.
