Everybody copies, consciously or unconsciously. We don’t live in a bubble, we have so called ‘influences’ in our writing, our styles. Having said that, it is easy enough to copyright a song- send the form PA with a $45 check to the copyright office (or do it online for $35).

You can also copyright a number your songs under a collection for the same fee, just make sure you add the names on page two so you can copyright them individually. I had heard that the copyright office was going to start charging $1 per song on that list, in addition to the copyright fee, but I don’t know if that’s been implemented yet. So copyright your songs. And if someone blatantly infringes your copyright, sue them!

I know that won’t help with the millions (I wish I would have that kind of an audience!) that may copy your songs on line for free, but at least they are paying you the ‘homage’ of thinking your music is cool to have (even for free!) I have more trouble with the guy who plagiarizes you and steals your idea and call him his/her own that with the occasional Joe who just wants to listen to your song for free.
