I could'nt agree more that the programmed drum or any programmed sound being different. I originally wanted to play bass. But then I found it limiting with what I wanted to play with just the bass. My father bought me a keyboard. Then I bought another. Then I bought an acoustic guitar. And soon after an electric. I have used the guitars to play bass along with the bass sound on my keyboard.
I saw a documentary about Genesis to where Mike Rutherford used some kind of kit onstage to program bass. Can't think of the name of it, but it looked like some kind of foot pedal.
As far as looped drums, it's so easy to alter a sound, it's hard to tell if the drum sound and drumming is real, at least to me. But if I really listen, one sounds a bit more artificial and less emotive.
I always like to play by hand, with the excepiton of a couple of tracks where I repeat the rythmn I create and repeat through a media player. I have a keyboard with all kinds of percussion sounds and I finger tap the keys. Although I would like to get percussion instruments. As silly as it sounds, I have even taped coffee cans together and used the lids for cymbles. I can't feel very bluesy or jazzy with a programmed rythmn.
Interesting topic.
Matt
