I agree with Jean's sentiments except for the comment above. In my estimation, the only thing worse than a mediocre drummer is a lousy drummer. I would prefer a drum machine to a middling drummer any day. Drummers, like all other musicians, are great when they know what they are doing. But a guy who can't keep time, lacks dynamics, plays too loud, ignores the other players, yada, yada....THAT guy needs to be replaced by a machine. Or a better drummer.
