Just like to chime in on this ever never ending debate on man versus machine. I have played in bands for years and had a lot of fun. Problem now is finding drummers who are willing to go out and practice at any one time and also play private parties and such that might have a problem with room or having to be low on the volume (within reason). My area (Battle Creek Mi)has a low low supply of drummers willing to go out and do this kind of stuff. Most are in it for the sit down and nail down your equipment for the duration kind of gig. I tried that and it got to be very boring sitting in one place for too long. I then decided to take my laptop and add commercial MIDI files stripped down to just the drum part. I then add the Bass part myself and then sing and play guitar to that live. It took some time to get the nerve up to go out like that but I just took the plunge and did it. I have not looked back since. I strive to get the song as close to the original as possible so playing to a virtual drummer makes sense to me. I have had very good feedback on my solo act and have stayed busy. Like we all say "nothing like a good live drummer anytime" but I am tired of waiting for the drummer to show up when needed.
