I always used the finger drum method, (using good keyboards), which enables a human, hands on feel, while being able to put percussion tracks on our demos in our non drum friendly home studio/office, (12' X 10' room). I don't set anything, and just play the bass drum and snare at the same time, (fingers), along to the song, with fills, then adding symbol parts and other percussion on later tracks. I know have real drums, (old Rogers), but without a proper setup and mics for the drums, it sounds like a porch band, nevermind a garge band sound! So, until we get the right mics, mixer, and sound control, it's finger drumming. I'd prefer real drums of course, as in everything else, but you got to go with what works at the time.
