Hi, Ande:
Thanks for posting both versions of this song. I enjoyed checking them out. Some random thoughts:
- Strong hook. I listened two nights ago, and I can still sing the beginning of the chorus.
- Pretty melody.
- While both versions have merit, I much prefer the Dave Brooks version. The warmth of his vocals elevates the song.
- As much as I like the hook, when "eventually" is repeated in line 3 of each chorus, the phrasing (elongating the first syllable and shortening the second and third syllables) feels unnatural to my ear.
- The verses could use fresher language and/or imagery. Lying in bed thinking about a lost love is a common image in pop music. Is there a way to convey this image so that it sounds new again?
- My primary concern: lyrically, the chorus feels too resolved. When the singer tells me that he knows -- without question -- that eventually he will find a new love and get on with life, I stop feeling his pain, and the song loses its emotional charge. Can you keep me in that place where the singer has no clue how life will go on, even though he recognizes that, eventually, it has to?
Best of luck with this song. You've got a powerful hook; I hope that the marketplace offers you a home for this song somewhere soon.
Mitch
