This is a very old discussion--the elders were having it in the scandalous 1920's, in the 1950's, probably every generation.
Don't forget, once you're a grown-up it doesn't matter how you were raised--you still have to face the consequences of your actions without help from Mom and Dad. I can't think of a time when kids were wise and trustworthy. They've always been kids...unwise, prone to poor judgment, selfish, always playing music that their parents think is a disgrace.
I think if you beat your kids, your kids just learn to beat their kids.
