I think that many young people grow up without learning to deal with challenges...without learning tenacity and work ethis...so they become very impatient and impulsive...which i think contributes to the unwillingness to work hard in school.
I am also very disturbed by the popularity of humiliation as entertainment; I think that the lack of morality comes from home, but also is fed by a constant diet of rudeness and people humiliating each other on tv, film and the internet/ the bullying in today's schools is a crisis level; the skill of thinking it is funny to make fun of someone is easily taught.
As for teachers giving in to students who feel that they have the right to negotiate grades...well....that tells me all I need to know about THAT school and district. I'm a teacher and can't imagine letting the students run the show.
