I think it has always been around,,,just not as broadcast. And with the population higher now,,,,there's more people in all levels of activity, or inactivity.
Go back through history and find all kinds of debactery in every civilization. Even recently here, in the 50's, (relatively recent), there were all kinds of things going on,,,,,but on the sly. Kids being abused by adults in high positions, parents being heavy drinkers, but were thought of as "just loud".
More of the same, just with bigger tools and wider known activities. Blogs, sites, a hundred news stations 24 hours a day telling of stories that were not told before, (having news at 12, 6 and 11, and just covered big event stories, with a lot of sports and weather.
People have always found ways to cheat, steal, lie, abuse, mislead, control and obtain power and position through any means possible. We just know more of them now, as as I said, the population takes the number of everyone up more and more as we grow larger.
