It's not slamming doors and pickin fights sleeping alone together night after night stay real close I want you out of my sight everything you say is wrong, don't hurt his pride She wasn't lookin for a lover, just a night on her own but she soon discovered, that she was not alone may I have this dance, she figure what's the harm but when he started talkin and took her in his arms and said. CHORUS Tell me are you married does your husband know is he waiting home for you do you have to go how long have you waited I know just what you're talking.... about we never know what love is til we know what it's not. Let the listener decide, from whatever's in the Line.) Is he waiting home for you? Do you have to go? (Good 'Hard' Rhyme. Simple 'conversation' How long have you waited? I know just what you're talking.... about. We never know what love is, (Here it turns philosophical. I wonder if "You never know..." might keep it more conversational, 1st Person.) 'til we know what it's not. ('til YOU know... What It's Not.) It's not slamming doors and pickin' fights, (Love's not...) sleeping alone, together, ni-i-ght after night. (Sustained Note on 'ni-i-ight' to express the long-term experience.) stay real close I want you out of my sight (Love's not holding you close, not trusting you, out of my sight) everything you say is wrong, don't hurt his pride (Love's not everything you say is wrong, because it hurts his pride!) The theme what love is not….is too obvious ? Maybe? Slam doors, mean arguments, sleeping alone in plain sight So two people stepping out, both recognize one another as missing something, both know what love is not so…big twist, they both fake it, each fooling the other. That’s the twist. Then some sort of epiphany? So, I don’t know….get quicker, leaner in the first verses, maker room for a twist. Just riffing idea here. More later.
