This is obviously a very personal lyric with a very specific story behind it and I'm sure your wife loves it! Perhaps that's where it should remain As an outsider looking in, the lyrics raise many questions... Why all the moving around from state to state? Does the first daughter belong to the husband? Is Mom the primary MBA breadwinner in the family? Life is certainly complicated lol... To make this "universally" relatable would indeed require a major overhaul. Have you considered actually recording your children singing it? Perhaps that would give you just the right perspective for a re-write
