A great tune. Put on some headphones and give a listen (this one came out a bit distorted): http://www.youtube.com/user/solowbassThe story goes that this entire tune was polished and recorded in a hurry at the last minute to add one more tune to Revolver. For some reason, Paul left the session in a huff and George took over the bass duties. Personally, if I never heard the story, I'd never think that no one other than Paul played it. Plus, George would have had to play Paul's instrument strung lefthanded... unless he borrowed a bass from a band in another studio. So, who do YOU think played??

Paul didn't play on the session for whatever reason. George played lead guitar and bass on this one. John played bass on a couple of the Let It Be songs, Long and Winding Road and Let It Be. www.beatlesbible.com has all of their songs listed with who played what on each song. Interesting site. Click on "songs" and you'll find what you're looking for.

Geoff Emerick's book states that the group hustled through this one by John when they realized they needed another Revolver song. The group practiced it hard and recorded it in 9 hours, he says. No mention of Paul's absence. Since he was the recording engineer, I would trust his words, plus it sounds like Paul to me.

There are other mentions of Paul being gone... McCartney does not appear on the track: the bass is played by Harrison. McCartney said, "I'm not sure but I think it was one of the only Beatle records I never played on. I think we had a barney or something and I said, 'Oh, [naughty word removed] you!', and they said, 'Well, we'll do it.'"

Hey guys! It's obvious!: For no one should have known better! Let it be, and just get back to paperback writing. For, I saw her standing there. So did Paul. Not a second time though. Once was enough. He saw her mess with his bass, so he went downstairs and drank a cup. Then, looking up he saw that he was late to play the bass. He ran across the universe, as it felt. He couldn't stand the pain of seeing her about to play. Why she had to go, and do that, she wouldn't say. But, like a fool on the hill, Yoko took that bass over and plugged it in like tomorrow never knows. Duh! Well, she said she said she played it anyway, oh yeah, yeah, yeah The dream is over.

Don't want to suggest I have the ultimate answer here but I am a bass guitarist, I've met the beatles, sat with them on recording sessions, played on the same stage with them and am entitled to an opinion.
It's close to call but my feeling is that this bass is played by a lead guitarist.
