To answer the question in this thread title: yes. His speeches always inspire me. I think you'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to deny that Obama has a way with words... But despite what many conservatives convince themselves to believe about grandiosity and fluff, he is an inspiration because of his character. It has been too long since America has seen a true leader. This man has more integrity, compassion, maturity, and restraint than the entire Republican party of recent years combined. We all need him - even you folks that are unable to see it right now...

Hi Jillian...
I can tell by your writing you're an idealist..
And that's fine I don't knock you for that.. but even if my favorite cantitdate were running... who held all my deepest core beliefs... I would not be so blind as to think he was gonna make the world a better place.. Too many people place to high an importance on the presidency.... No matter what Obama stands for (which is hard to say as he doesn't like taking a position on the harder issues).. it won't matter a hill of beans if he can't convince Congress and the Senate... So before anyone gets their hopes up around one cantitdate or another.. remember that the only real power a president holds absolutely is to go to war or "peace keeping missions"... that's about all... everything else has to go through the political system first.. Political Courage?? Boy am I asking for an a** kicking?? lol I think G. Bush was exactly what we needed at that particular moment in time. I often wonder how history will view him in the decades to come. In my opinion, it is human nature to blame all problems on the sitting president. I think we had to stand up and take a stance on the attacks after 911. He is not the most well spoken president we've had but I can remember throughout the years, many politicians blustering and threatening action so often that the U.S. was almost taken as a joke at the time. Not with George Bush. He said what he meant (In Plain Spoken Words) and meant what he said. After 8 years of double speak it was a welcome change for me at the time.
Bill Clinton was a great president in my opinion, but tossed it by trying to be “cute” with the press and country as a whole. I lost respect for him when he didn’t have the political courage to tell the press and the people that his sex life was none of their business. This is not an appropriate question in the first place but if you feel the need to answer it, then as President I do feel that you should tell the truth. I have been a registered democrat all my life but, in my opinion we/they have gone way too far to the left, embracing every freakish group coming down the pike. I am pretty much someone who lives and lets live but we as a civilization have to have some moral compass to live by. By posting this it is not my intention to offend anyones political views. I am just as likely to vote Republican as Democrat. But lets face it. Some of the comments on here are pointed directly to an individual who could have done nothing without the help of many congressmen and senators, Democrats and Replublicans, in Washington. WE PUT THEM THERE!! So I hope we can learn to look beyond the rhetoric of both parties. Filter out what is truly in the best interest of our country and move beyond the political games. I would like to welcome Mrs. Palin to the race. Seems like a fresh breath of air for me at least! Washington Experience is the last thing I’m looking for as president of the U.S.
Whoops!! Sorry , Got on a rant there. No!! Barack's speech did not inspire me. Hollywood could have hired a good actor to inspire me as much. (WHERE’S THE BEEF???)

Yes It inspired me. It inspired me to tell more people to vote for McCain.
It inspired me to tell the kids coming up that it is their responsibility to take care of themselves. It is NOT the Governments job. The Federal Government has a responsibility to protect you from harm. NOT be your care giver, your babysitter. What ever happened to people taking responsibility for their actions.
All I got from that speech was how the Government was going to control more and more of my life. How there would be more social programs.

HiDee Y'All!
I enjoyed watchin' Hillary's Speech...especially enjoyed the "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Suit" Quip...give THAT writer a Raise for the "Quotability" Factor.what a Doozey!!!
Missed most of O's & Bill's speeches/Did watch O's Wife & Kids do a great job on Nat'l TV.
Fell outta my chair when I read McCain's got a Gal for VP, tho...what a GREAT Move on His Part..& she looks More Impressive the more I read about her.
Personally, I wish there was a "None of The Above" box to check on the Ballot. I don't see EITHER Party's Candidate making any great "CHANGE" until we Citizens HAVE some Great Change to SPEND.
Hopefully on Something "Made In USA", I'll add.
Back to makin' an Honest Buck, ALL of which I Owe Someone.
Big Hugs, Stan

It will be interesting to see whether America is in better shape four years from now. Of course, there is no way for any of us to know in advance what things will be like. And even if we did, when the time comes we'll all have our own perceptions of it anyhow. If you think about it, arguing over what things are going to be like in the future is pretty ridiculous when we can't even agree on what things are like at present, or even were like in the past. Maybe all this arguing is really just a measure of our own happiness. Could it be that we choose to express our discontent by projecting it onto events beyond our control, so we don't have to take responsibility for it? I don't know. It might be worth thinking about, though.

What ever happened to people taking responsibility for their actions. He's a perfect example of a young person growing up in a difficult circumstance, and through hard work, bringing himself to a point where he could possibly be our future president. This is a difficult subject in the music world. The fashion statement of "Bush hating" has taken many people's eyes off of the mark.
Saw Obama's speech. Was uninspired. He should be in show business, not politics. He is good at working a crowd of eager supporters, but can he lead an international superpower?
Hilary's speech was "taking one for the team" so 2012 might still be in her sights.
Clinton's speech was also very entertaining as he danced around not exactly saying what was on his mind, and giving Obama a list of promises to keep.
Palin's speech was very natural, and moving. For me anyway. I feel she is trustworthy.
I dig old fashioned class and values. That's what made this country great, and the lack thereof is dragging it down. Common sense and common courtesy will always be the way to be. may not be as exciting as unneeded dram, but it's what I prefer.
Can we get some people in office that will run the country like a Fortune 500 company, and separate the business from the emotion?
We are the greatest country in the world, but greed has gotten us upside down financially, and we are becoming unhealthily polarized politically and socially.
I still fondly remember how everyone put their differences aside, after 9/11, and we were, at least for a few months, The United States of America.

Did Barack's Speech inspire you?
Nope!!...Race is over some/I say...Palin choice was genius...start asking women you know what they think of the idea that a woman could be VP...hear what they think of the idea that a woman is a heart beat away...see their pride swell...they will rise up and seize the opportunity whether they are RE or Dem...do you realize that women not that long ago weren't allowed to vote...
Hillary was not the right woman...this gal could be...we will see...
For the women this is a rally cry to be heard...you/us guys...we are in deep now...and rightfully so...I can't wait to see her go at it with Biden...should be fun

That's why all our jobs are going overseas. Hardworking peoples pensions disappear while failed execs get million dollar golden parachutes and insurance companies refuse to pay claims on catastrophic illness by changing benefits midstream. Sounds like a great plan to me.

"Ignore This User" has to be the most under-rated forum feature.
Think about it. Used judiciously, "Ignore This User" allows you to say whatever you like without leaving yourself open to broadside attacks. Whenever you read a post full of stupid remarks, go to that person's profile and PUSH THE BUTTON. Whenever someone tries to goad you into defending your beliefs, go to their profile and PUSH THE BUTTON. That one little button lets you construct the social circle of your choosing out of the cesspool of human waste. If you doubt what I say, try it. PUSH THAT BUTTON. The only way it could be more satisfying is if it read, "Ignore This Idiot".

Hey Derek, What I find interesting, is that the subject of possibly 3 Supreme Court Justices retiring during the next term hasn't been brought up yet....And while the President doesn't have "absolute" power, it is still their choice of who(m?) to nominate, and this election at least gives us a clear idea of which way the Court will go. And regardless of where each of us stands, I would find it ironic in the extreme if a woman swings her vote simply to support another woman, especially when one of her main goals is overturning Roe v Wade...But then again, that's one of the reasons she was chosen. "Strange days indeed. Most peculiar momma"...J. Lennon Midnite

HiDee Bob. I dunno what losing "Roe-vs-Wade" would mean now that that French "Morning-After Pill" is so readily-available at your Neighborhood Pharmacy.
What worries me is "What IS America gonna Fabricate that we can Profitably Sell Overseas..(Besides War Materiel)?" Our Balance of Trade payments are WAY-Lopsided. Our National Debt's in the Rafters, & projections I read somewhere estimated Obama's Plans would require $3+ Trillion in NEW National Debt and McCain's would take $7 1/2 Trillion.
American Corporations already pay one of the Highest Tax Rates of Developed Nations. Obviously the days of Cheap Energy and Lifetime Jobs are over-with...& with no Draft in-efect, our Military Costs are going to continue climbing, just to staff it...nevermind what each Stealth Whateveritis is gonna cost.
I don't think Congress has Yet to give The President "Line Item Veto" Power..so "Earmarks" on Pork Projects will continue like there's No Recession on the Horizon...&..get ready for all us Boomers to tap into Social Security/Someone's Gotta Pay For It...
Someone Brilliant compared Taxes to a Parasite: When the Parasite gets Too-Big, the Host usually Dies.
So.....I'm not expecting Much from ANY Candidate who promises Grandiose "Fixes" without making BIG plans to Increase American TRADE and JOBS. (They could START with Cheaper Copyright Fees and Patent Costs..eh?) It's gonna take a LOT of Yankee Ingenuity to cover $3-7 1/2 TRILLION in additional "Expenses" around here...Whichever Candidate is "The Chosen."

Hidee Hey Stan O', All yer other(& everyone else's) fears & despair regardless of who wins are totally justified, which is why I don't much count on the chosen one being able to make much of a difference... However, regarding the RvW, the "Right to Life" consider the morning after pill to be nothing more than an early abortion. Simple as that. "Life" begins at conception. The morning after pill takes affect after a potential conception. Personally, it's not really a concern for me...I just find the women/woman irony odd... Midnite HiDee Bob. I dunno what losing "Roe-vs-Wade" would mean now that that French "Morning-After Pill" is so readily-available at your Neighborhood Pharmacy.

Regardless of how anyone feels, and I sincerely hope that ya'll will vote YOUR consciences, to overlook the power of the Supreme Court is to ignore the results of the 2000 election...For better or worse, it was the Court's decision.

Hey Bob
Good point and I'd missed that... though again the president doesn't even wield full power in who is selected.. he only holds the power to nominate.. though you are right.. it does make a big difference on who the choices will be, because they can't refuse all his nominations... and chances are all his nominations will in some way reflect his political leanings... so I think yes you do have a good point there! Humm, Midnite Bob, The Supreme Court ignored the results of the 2000 Presidental Election? As I remember when all the votes were certified in Florida George Bush had the most votes. After the automatic re-count George Bush still had the most votes. Every Case Al Gore took to state court to try to overturn the election, he lost.
The Liberal Newspapers, you know the ones I mean, went to Flordia and investagated to the hilt. They couldn't find anything so you never read about it in the Newspapers.
However as an addumumn to the story, if Florida had really been had they could have sent George Bush a "message" and not Re-elected Jeb Bush Governor. And they would not have voted for Bush again in 2004. End of Story.

Derek Good points, Derek and Bob.... There is another interesting dynamic to this though. Let's suppose, as seems likely, that the democrats will maintain a majority in both houses. What does that mean for supreme court justice confirmations? If McCain is elected, of course he will nominate conservative justices. But they will have to be moderate to get through confirmation. On the other hand, if Obama is elected, he could probably nominate liberal justices who really aren't that moderate. I know, I know - we're not supposed to apply labels of conservative and liberal to supreme court justices. But we all know that they have leanings, whether we apply a label or not.... Scott

Stan,
Excellent post. The fact that you haven't decided who to vote for allows you to bring up the TRUTH, and not just cherry pick the pet issues of either side. The reason I like Palin, and to a lesser extent McCain is that both have shown they are willing to do what they think is right, regardless of their own parties dogma. Of course I totally respect those who say they disagree with Palin and McCain's view of what is right and wrong. I do myself. McCain's view of immigration is horrible in my opinion. Palin's far left religious views (i.e. creationism) is short sighted, even as a religious person goes. I think Obama and Biden have things I agree with and disagree with as well. The difference is that neither has DEMONSTRATED a willingness to go against or go after their own party. For me that's a very important quality. It's interesting that the Democrats actually ACKNOWLEDGE that McCain has gone against the Republicans over his career. But they say he didn't do it enough. But why didn't they show where THEY have gone against THEIR party in the past? They can't because Obama has the most left wing extremist voting record in the entire Senate. Anyone who feels that the left wing or the right wing is correct 100% of the time simply isn't thinking for themselves. And that's a big concern. We need some free thinkers.. we've had the clones of other people's thoughts (Bush anyone?) and the last thing we need is a presidential equivelent to a "straight ticket" voter who can't be bother to weigh an issue at a time rather than supporting blind party dogma. Any voter who thinks the Republican or Democratic candidates for every single office in their local, state and federal offices are the best is ignorant at best. It's neither true nor what's best for anyone. It's a type of bigotry in my opinion that is no worse than using race or sex to vote a certain way. So voting straight party dogma on the wide myriad of federal issues to me is just as ignorant and shows zero leadership. For me, that's a very telling issue.

Hey Ray, I didn't say the Supreme Court ignored the results...I said that "to overlook the power of the Supreme Court is to ignore the results"...Two different things, and I dropped it in there simply as another example of how the Court, and its make-up, has a very real affect on our lives. My point, still goes back to the irony of the "Disenchanted Hillary" voters voting for such an adamant Pro-Lifer. Midnite Humm, Midnite Bob, The Supreme Court ignored the results of the 2000 Presidental Election?

Hi Derek, Even when a President nominates a Justice and thinks He knows where the nominee stands on particular issues, they sometimes end up taking stances and voting that are in direct opposition to what the President has hoped for. We've got a few on the bench right now who bear that out. I just hope whomever is elected turns out to be one of the best Presidents we've ever had whether I voted for and supported them or not. I just want what's best for the country both in the long and short term, not just for my party affiliation. Right now I'm a luke warm McCain supporter but if Obama is elected I hope he proves me wrong on all counts.
Or...you could simply write me in as I don't seem to have a life anymore and have nothing to do the next four years as far as I know,LOL. Just kidding on that one obviously.

Hey Mark, For those who are sitting on the fence that could make you an intelligent fool. Now there's another oxymoron for the list. Doesn't Billy Mays advertise for Oxymoron on TV? Or was that just Oxyclean? Yeah I know, that was a really weak attempt at humor.

I think Rush Limbaugh was once addicted to Oxymorons. I don't know, maybe I read that backwards.

What I am actually most curious about, Ben, is will McCain give his speech during an early enough hour to allow his main constituents to listen? Maybe do it as a remote from the parking lot of a Denny's right after the Early Bird Special? Jes' wonderin':-) Midnite I didn't (eastern time) couldn't stay up.

Late to the game, but I think the best candidates from both parties were left on the sidelines. To answer the question, the only speech by Obama that will ispire me will be the one where he explains how all these "Wonderful" social programs are going to be paid for without digging deeper into my pocket. Will this question ever be answered until it is too late? I am really tired of working until almost midyear to pay taxes. I don't think McCain is anything close to perfect either, but I believe he will take this country in a better direction than Obama.

As to what Brian brought up about being open minded and not staying with a party just for the sake of "that's my party". I agree. But when I bring this up with some family members that are party loyalists, they call that thinking wishy-washy, or fence sitting. Yeah, I say, "I can see both yards and MORE from sitting on the top of my fence between properties". Best way to tell who is doing what, and with whom! And most likely, why! Except for this and one other site, I don't join anything. This site of many thinkers, and many ways of doing things is why I am here. I don't join British Pop music sites, or any one genre club. I like to know about and think about many types of music. The same idea can be used for politics. It's not a baseball or football game, where we cheer for one side. The USA is ONE country, not two. Too many sides within a side anyway, so why the need to be strictly one or the other. The so-called rules for each party do not always translate in actions anyway. For me to be one or the other, (or do one voting way for one party), I would think of myself as having just one eye, and having a stiff neck. And having my body locked down not able to turn to the other side for any view or sounds to be appreciated. Issues and problems can be solved better with a no party system. Just everyone in office THINK about how to solve each issue, and discuss it, (without party consequences or favors needed), then get to work on working for the USA party. One team with many members, many thoughts. Then present the solutions and costs per person for them, and have the "people" vote on how they get done. Stop in the borough hall once a month and vote! No ego voting. No silly sense of a rock star politician. JUST ISSUES and COSTS. Let the people really have a say. That would add one more aspect of the land of the free. With BS from politicians, (and the selling of that to cheering and backing believers), and the big money they are vying for, how can we keep going along with the double mafia like two party system? At least have pizza for the folks at gatherings! Same old same "old". Ditto heads,,,,and whatever Dems are called. GEEZZZSSSHHH! IT's NOT a Ball Game! It's NOT a team that plays near your house! IT's life and death, and riches and poverty. Not a home-run about to be hit. OK,,,,,I'll take my meds now. Give me a few minutes to get away from reality. But, ya know what I mean? Enough is enough alright, but enough of politicians for their job's sake, and have things really be "for the people". SHORT terms for every one, and NO party! Do NOT be labeled, Be a freakin free thinker, able to actual think of ALL the possibilities without concern for job security or kiss ass. The US has Been there and done that. Time for a new instrument, like how the solid body electric guitar was. Where's a Les Paul when you need one? John
