I just returned from the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) convention in Las Vegas where I talked to one of the vendors demonstrating Adobe Audition 2, which is sound editing software similar to ProTools. The guy giving the demonstration told me about a cheap way to build a "sound booth" of sorts using just a simple box and sound foam. Has anybody heard of that? Before I left for the convention, I had only 2 days to write and record a song for the American Idol song contest. My plane was 3 hours from leaving and I found myself at a computer in a noisy room with a guitar and a microphone and time for one or two takes. The mic picked up the air contitioning, the fan in the computer etc. I was told that the box, just 12" on each side with sound foam on each inside wall, would kill 90% of the room noise. The guy who told me about had built one himself and testified to the effectiveness of it. I am going to build one and I will try to make it as light as possible so that it can fit on a mic stand so that I can adjust the height. Any feedback on this idea is welcome.

Three standard interior doors, treated with acoustic foam or fiberglass batting and covered with burlap or some other coarse cloth determined by what color you want it to look like.

Another cheap alternative,
Hang moving blankets, the kind movers use, on 3 sides. Dont forget to use closed headphones while recording.
