Two weeks ago I was in Florida playing with Chuck Lawson and the Coconut Crew. We were opening for the Little River Band, who, by the way, were excellent. While there, Chuck's guitar player, Doug Dickerson, invited me over to Leitz Music to try out the Line 6 Variax bass. It's incredible. On the bass I was able to dial up an old Fender P bass or Jazz bass; a Music Man for slapping; a Rickenbacker; Bootsy sounds; a Hofner like Paul McCartney's; a decent upright; an Alembic that sounded like Phil Lesh's; and several others. I spent a bit of time, but didn't try everything. The bass sounded clean. I thought I could barely detect some latency, not enough to affect anything and it was so little, I'm not sure it wasn't my imagination. Not even as much latency as I'd get going direct to a compressor in Pro Tools. I'm saving my nickles in a Variax jar. Not the bass, but a guy I am in a band with has the Variax guitar. At the twist of a knob, he has instant Tele, Strat, Les Paul, Rick, 12-string, Martin, and a bunch of others. It is impressive to say the least.
Line 6 has taken their amp-modelling concept and applied it to guitar, and created the modelling guitar.
Roland actually pioneered this approach with the VG-8 (now the VG-88). It was released at least 10 years ago, and allowed the user to model dozens of different guitars and pick-ups. The VG-8 is a floorboard device, and not built into a guitar the way the Variax is. I think Roland lost a lot of potential sales on the VG-8 (it is an amazing device) because a lot of players thought it was some kind of a synth.
I think these Variaxes are amazing tools for a gigging player who needs to emulate a lot of popular sounds, and does not want to pay for and then lug around a whole closetful of instruments.
