Who are your favorite relative unknowns? There's a local bass player here named Dennis Crouch who is an upright monster. He plays Mondays at the Station Inn with a band of studio and Opry pros called "the Time Jumpers." They play Western Swing and, for my money, are the second best band of this type currently in the world, the best being Asleep at the Wheel. Dennis walks, slaps, pulses and drives the beat exquisitely. His tone and intonation are impeccable. He sits back, never looking at his fingers, smiling and making it look easy...it ain't. My unsung drummer is a guy with three names: Pat McInereney...Pat Mac and Ernie. Pat plays with Nanci Griffith and has recorded with Doc Watson and Hootie and the Blowfish. Pat's grooves are always satisfying. He can lay down the kit just right, then turn around and put tasty percussion on the overdub. I did an acoustic album with him Where we only used percussion, no kit. Pat used the light flash from his metronome so there'd be no bleed from headphone clicks. The time and the groove were KILLER! Mark Brzezecki (drums) and Tony Butler (bass) of Big Country fame...one of the tightest, most creative,innovative and outstanding rhythm sections in all of music. They are not exactly unknown, but certainly tend to be overlooked. Hard to put into words what sets these guys apart. They are simply excellent! You really have to listen for yourself. I got to sing "The Weight" with Rick on the last gig he ever did....
It was in Chicago on a Sunday night...
He left here to go to Detroit (or An Arbor) to do a radio show, then drove home to Woodstock.
Told his wife he was tired, went upstairs and was gone .
Ricks body had been ravaged by Diabetes, he probably weighed 275 lbs, but that voice...
We were sharing a microphone and every time he'd start singing I'd choke up....
An amazing night for yours truly !
Anyway...my fav. unsung drummer of all time was Earl Palmer from New Orleans.
Earl played drums on all the Little Richard sessions and hundreds more from Fats Domino to Cannonball Adderley.
Bass player...there was a guy named Harvey Brooks...whew...hardly played any notes but had a touch and feel that were magic.
Bass players and drummers......we guitar players should build a shrine to them, we couldn't do ANY of our favorite [naughty word removed] without them !

bob, What an amazing honor conferred on you by the crap game (or some might say the crappy game, half full, half unfull) of life. Yeah, Harvey Brooks...the Electric Flag...Summer Breeze...what a great player. Victor Wooten makes me want to quit the bass, Harvey Brooks makes me want to try harder. What a life. That Born to be Wild ride, what power, what a statement. Last week I had the pleasure of playing it with vocalist, drummer, Sonny Farmer. Amen, Bob- having a great rhythm section is such a pleasure....
I first say Tris Imboden play in the 70's with a southern Cal band 'Honk", and he showed up out here with a Hawaiian band 'Kalapana' in the 80's- I think he plays drums for Chicago now...
Bass? James Jameson (the Motown guy), Carol Kaye, Aston Barrett- tho they're not exactly unknowns.

I'd say my favorite bass and drum players either currently perform with Monte Montgomery (my favorite guitar player), or have in the past.
Phil Bass on drums, Mikel Urdy on auxiliary percussion, and probably Chris Maresh on bass guitar. Chris does a lot of other stuff now, including touring with Eric Johnson.
But the three mentioned players, when playing along Monte, create a wall of sound like I haven't heard in ages.

Our Woodstock coordinator Vickie Russell did one of Rick's last gigs and wrote a nice tribute song about him on her recent release. She said he was really looking bad when she saw him as well but was a total sweetheart to her and treated her as an equal. As a diabetic myself, I know what it does to you.. I am sure all those years he had on the road didn't help. Thanks for sharing the story Bob. It's amazing how small the music world really is.

Not unknown..... sort of limited there... I know what I like though..... Bass........Geddy Lee of RUSH........ He inspires me... Drums... Bass...Aston "Family Man" Barrett.
One of my favorite drummers here in Nashville is "Drummy" Dave DePriest, who is probably the only one I just named that actually qualifies as "unknown".

How about Victor Wooten (bass) and Future Man (drums) from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Ever heard of them? Lot of people havent heard of them suprisingly enough! If you've never heard of them,go buy the records. Victor Wooten makes any bass player listed on this page want to take up the bag pipes! Wooten has a few solo records so check them out for your self.

I first heard Victor play at a restuarant here in Nashville. I was having dinner with some musician friends and in comes this guy with a four-string bass and an amp. "Oh cool," I thought, "there's going to be a band." It was a solo gig. Victor was the band. He played all night and stunned our group of session musicians. Playing with the Flectones, Victor, who has been Bass Player Magazine's Bassist of the Year, often does flips from a standing position while playing the bass. i was attending a summer music camp in '95 or '96 in Redlands, CA and a counselor asked to barrow my VW van to go pick up the feature artists from Ontario International. The artists were Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey!....... I told him yes.
They both signed my headliner ( when I sold it, the buyer got a van without a headliner!)
They battled it out that night on their basses for 45 min. straight!
Although I would actualy rather see V. Wooten solo in a club,I just had to share this story with you.

There was a guy out here (Southeast Michigan) that used to play with harp player Madcat Ruth named Jason Bookaloo. Absolutely jaw-dropping player...technique, taste and tone...he and Madcat used to do duets that were unbelivable. There were actually some recordings made, "Live At Nature's Table", that are worth finding if you can. Amazing.

Being a bass player I am a drummers biggest fan. I would love to be a drummer but I don't have the coordination. I am 50 years old and I like a lot of different music. I think the rythym section of Dream Theater with Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Myung (bass) are one of the best around. Another drummer who is not really an unknown that I have been listening to and pick my jaw up off the floor at his licks is Joey Jordison of Slipknot fame. Those guys are nuts I know but through all the obscenities and yelling at times they have some pretty heavy lines in their songs that are cool as [naughty word removed].

Lotta good bassist mentioned here, altho most are pretty well known i.e Jameson, Wooten, etc Since the field is wide open (beyond th eoriginal question) I'd like to add Jaco and Gary Willis. Both unbelievable players AND musical.
