I've spent the past five years learning the upright bass. I've got an Englehart M1 with a Fishman pickup and a Fishman pre-amp. I record it with the pickup, just recently I did an album of torch songs and ballads with all pickup. You can hear an old album I did with it on cdbaby looking under Bob Frank.
Six months ago, I did a session with it. One of the songs modulated to F# and my intonation went to Disneyland. I went right home and marked the fret positions with magic marker on the side of the fingerboard. Last session, I modulated from Eb to E without a problem. I have no shame.
Any upright citizens out there?

Mike-
I'm more of an electric player, but I've spent some time on the upright. Love the sound, wish I was able to dedicate more time to it. Unfortunetly, my teaching gig keeps me busy during the day and my kids need quiet at night. So my regular practice usually goes to the electric, and that's what I use for gigs. I'm sure you know, upright is just brutal on your chops if you're not practicing regularly.
So F# huh? Bad key. No, excuse me, evil key. No, sorry, demonic key. Not surprised you went out of tune. I mark basses all the time on my teaching gig - good call. Love to hear you play sometime.

It's a tough key, alright, and here I'm doing a session with a couple of my heroes, Jim Unger, an absolutely amazing fiddle player who used to be bandleader for the Louisiana Hayride, and Doug Jernigan, a "pedal steel player's pedal steel player". I first heard Doug twenty five or so years ago playing with Vassar Clements' band. Doug and Jim are two of the very best on their instruments and here I am floundering around in F#, I had to overdub that section after the guys went home.
