It's holiday season and for those looking for value in musical gifts, do you guys have any suggestions of affordable older gear? i.e. Guitar Effects, Keyboards, etc.?

An interesting question! Guitar effects pedals have become very "boutique" in nature. There are tons of tiny companies making the "absolute best sounding" pedals (distortion, overdrive, mostly) for silly prices. While the cool guys buy the boutique pedals, the rest of us use last year's cool pedals and sound just as good! The Bad Monkey is a great overdrive which was only $40 new. I use a Behringer pedal tuner (cheap, but works), Joyo and Moen Chinese knoockoffs ($40 - $50 new), a great Digitech delay (not considered cool but sounds great).
I am not a keyboard expert but like pedals, some are considered cool (Roland, Korg) and others are not. The Casio Privia series sounds very good but is less expensive. I would be cautious buying a used keyboard because there is a lot to go wrong and they are hard to get repaired. Yamaha makes cheap keyboards that do what they do very well. Keyboard players usually know whether they want weighted keys or not. Weighted keys feel like a real piano and unweighted keys feel more like an organ.

1. On the top of the list would be used Shure SM57 and SM58 microphones. These are an industry standard and very inexpensive. You can pick up used ones in decent condition for 20-50 bucks each.
2. Next on the list would be FREE plugins. There are so many good ones that cost NOTHING. Check out REVERB.com free plugins (there are other sites as well).
3. Don't skimp on the accessories - cheap things like guitar polish, finger-ease, a new fingerslide or capo, a new guitar strap, music stand. Sometimes the little stuff makes life better but the musician in your life is always focused on the 'bigger' stuff.
Most of these things will fit in a stocking!

I'm giving an SM 57 to a friend for Christmas. Really good no frills all purpose mic.
Also giving a Marantz Professional MPM-1000U Studio Condenser Mic to a friend who knows little about recording or computers. ALL you need to do is plug into the USB port (of a Mac or PC), open up a free program like Audacity, click record, and then point the mic at your mouth and off you go, and all for under fifty bucks, condenser mic but no phantom power required. Full specs, clean balanced sound. The perfect beginner's mic for vocals or spoken word.
