vs The hypocrisy of democracy Is your only as free as they want you to be If you disrupt the social order You'll find yourself heading for the border vs The dignity of autocracy Is they don't even pretend that your free If you don't tow the party line You'll end up dead or doing time Chorus: If you're really down on your luck And sleeping in a pick up truck The government has run out of cash The big bankers are old money trash You might find it hard to believe That you live in a democracy That you live in a democracy vs When they repossess your house Cause your money has run out Your car's older than your date And she's over twenty eight vs When your vote don't count for squat They say be thankful for what you got The rich hide their cash in off shore accounts Don't pay the taxes we can't live without Chorus: Oh democracy what have you done for me Is this the land of the brave and the free Or Orwell's fantasy turned reality A land fit for no one run by nobody's And now even the air ain't free God save us from democracy God save us from democracy

You hit the nail on the head with this one. This is all too true in our times. Makes me wonder if, after nearly two and a half centuries, democracy is one of those projects which linger unfinished with details still to attend to. Most feel because we have the right to vote that we truly have democracy, but which ever candidate wins is controlled by the corporate stooges. Hope to see this change before my life is over.

Some call this a democracy. Some call it a republic. I'm not sure which it is. Could it be both at the same time?

Hey Beechnut Thanks, glad you liked it. I agree with the corporate stooges bit. As for the rest I don't really know enough about the subject to comment.

My idea of a democratic country is a place where the political parties listen to the electorate it doesn't happen in the UK Joe, oh they are all ears before the election then afterwards couldn't give a s*** .Especially Tory rich boy Cameron and his crew. Good lyric Travis

It sounds as if the UK went down the same road as the US did, especially after Margaret Thatcher, who was pretty much Reagan's counterpart here. I am really not sure what, if any, difference there is between democracy and republic. Never had this discussion in civics classes--only comparison to dictatorships. This is much like discerning the different between state and commonwealth, as four of our states(MA,PA,VA,KY) consider themselves the latter. But whatever label one chooses, we are obviously not governed by the people's wishes most of the time.

Hey Travis I agree it's not worth voting. They don't give a monkeys what the average person needs.

Hey beechnut I think your right, they basically don't care what the electorate want or need.

Hi Joe,
I enjoyed the lyric...though I have a different world view than the one this lyric describes!
For instance...
When they reposes your house Cause your money has run out
If I stop paying the mortgage on my house, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for the bank to repossess my house. Someone has to lose out in that deal, and if I break my promise to pay...that someone should be me.
The rich hide their cash in off shore accounts Don't pay the taxes we can't live without
When the rich, or anyone, find a way to legally pay less taxes...I see no problem with that. Who wants to pay more taxes than they have to? And, anyway, I don't think we should be counting on living on other people's money. It's too easy to get addicted to other people's money!

A democracy is run directly by the people. A republic is run by representatives of the people. So the U.S. is actually a republic.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner. In a representative republic the sheep has a gun.

Hey Lisa Thanks for the reply. I think a lot of banks/building societies were far to eager to repossess peoples homes and workplaces, without giving them the time (or opportunity) to make other arrangements.
As for the tax lines I think it's morally(if not legally) wrong for the obscenely rich to avoid paying the proper amount of taxes by using some legal loopholes.
Peace Joe

Hey Joe, what you doing with that (song) in your hand? I loved this, I love people exercising their free speech in music. The country is a mess, voting is a joke, and I'm sitting here unemployed since September with two college degrees and a wealth of experience. Guess it doesn't help I had my 54th birthday yesterday. But this is not about me.....your work is fantastic!!

UK JOE--
Thanks for stirring the coals--
Many folks in the MIDDLE have little say until the next election--
We need enough laymen in Government to force the different branches to perform by the laws that are tried and true, for the people--
MOCRATS AND PUBLICANS are tied to special interest groups, NOT TO THE PEOPLE!
ROME lasted 400 years--Don't know if WE'LL last that long--MONEY IS ALREADY WORTH 1/12 OF WHAT IT WAS IN THE 50'S!
WRITE ON--

Hey Popbumber I know what you mean. In the U.K. there are an awful lot of people qualifying with degrees in useless subjects(media consultant, social skills etc.) What a waste of time and money.
