I think you can tell a story with only music. The only difference is that the pictures that come to mind when listening are filled in by the listener and the plot points are as well. The music however evokes that story and creates it as a collaboration with the listener, rather than when the music acts as a collaborator with a lyricist. It results in similar ways I think.
