Too many films today rely on gore and effects, and back in the 40's & 50's it was just too much theater type acting and WAY too much dialog.
The Exorcist is NOT all gore and effects and it is not coming off like a play in a theater being dragged out with dialog and loooong explanations for everything.
It is just flat out frightening and brilliant.
