DDonald Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree by a New York jury. The verdict stemmed from a scheme to conceal a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
Details of the conviction
The Scheme: In October 2016, Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 to keep her silent about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump.
The Cover-up: After Trump became president, he reimbursed Cohen through a series of payments made in 2017. The Trump Organization falsified business records by labeling these reimbursements as legal expenses.
The Felony Charge: In New York, falsifying business records is a felony if it is done to "aid or conceal the commission of another crime". The other crime, in this case, was an illegal conspiracy to influence the 2016 election through unlawful means, such as concealing negative information from voters.
The Verdict: After hearing testimony from 22 witnesses and reviewing documents, the jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts on May 30, 2024.
