I am not sure there ever was "much opportunity" for people who wanted to write lyrics or songs for a living.
Based on the laws of large numbers, and for many combinations of reasons, only a small percentage of those who aspire actually do so successfully.
Based on the business model, I defer to those in it, like Mark Alan Barnette, to explain how it all works and how it must be navigated just to have a chance to gain access to the lineup.
Based on an insider community model, so much culture and ways of doing things must be learned to operate within a closed community.

Lots of impediments before AI and none of it is going to deter someone with a hunger to creatively express themselves.

And opportunity is what you make it.

I was here way before 2017 lol. I think I first signed up around 2008 or so.

True there was never a ton of real opportunity, but there was a perceived sense of opportunity. In a world where even butchers can be songwriters, the
Window of slender possibilty closed.

Today your best shot is to be your own artist, at least nobody can stop you from putting your own music online.

Im sure people are using AI as the artist rather than just the co creator. Which I find weird.

But I think the pure songwriter, especially lyrics only people, are forgotten.

If you know somebody who maybe puts out albums or plays live, and you can manage to convince them to use your lyrics over millions of others, maybe you can at least dent the industry, a real slight dent.
