Here is a unique opportunity for songwriters: The Erie Canal Discovery Center, part of the Niagara County Historical Society (of Niagara Falls fame) is sponsoring a free song contest for songs about the Erie Canal or the Lockport Locks. The deadline for this is April 1st, 2010. To print an application and rules you can check out the website: www.niagarahistory.orgYou can hear the past two years winners there too. 2008's winner, Doc Stuart's, "The Ballad of the Lockport Locks," and 2009's Patrick Gordons, "Down on the Erie Canal." Performed by local songsmith John Culliton Mahoney. The deadline is April 1st, and the winners will be awarded on May 8th to coincide with the "Key to the Locks" ceremony that awards a local citizen for contributions to our community and celebrates the seasonal opening of the Canal and Locks.
