I spent a day on Youtube checking out great drum solos. Most of the best drummers are featured along with home town drummers. Great lessons from Joe Morello, Dave Weckl and others for free. All you have to do is watch and learn from the best.

After listening over and over again, I found myself always going back to Dave Weckl. He is the most complete drummer since Buddy Rich.

Good choice, John. I love Weckl's work with Chick Corea and Paul Simon.

Weckl and Corea are awesome. I like the way Chick stares at him like, uhoh, he's gonna go again. There he goes, and the other musicians are shaking their heads like, this guy's a monster. He makes those drums sing. Rare talent! Also Vinnie Callaietti, or something like that, is up there too. One of the most tasteful jazz/rock/funk fusion drummers is Steve Gadd.

Like to get this thread goin Mike, with great drummers from all genres. We have had favorite drummers before, but it would be nice to hear about drummers from all different styles of music.

I was lucky enough to tune the piano of, then Jam with Chic Corea before soundcheck, while Dave Weckl stood to the side and looked on. (Corea humored me, and let me jam with standard C jazz/blues playing.

During soundcheck, I got to hear Dave Weckl play while I was still onstage, hanging around the piano to make sue it was still good for Corea. I was blown away at the drumming Weckl was doing just to warm up! Then, when they got to songs for a rehearsal, it became clear I was hearing the most crafted and best played modern jazz form three players that could possibly be. (Wish I remembered the bass player's name). Standup bass. I was told his name as if I should know it. ("Oh,,,,ya know that's........"

Weckl used a minimum 4 piece drum set for this show, (as I've seen him use a large setup, with many toms, on video). And wow, did he ever make those few drums sound like two sets! And the precision was incredible! His left hand for the snare work would have so many variations of strikes, with even different volumes for ghost notes!

Was one hellava show later! The crowd would go nuts during Weckl's really great sections with the band, never mind his solos!

Steve Gadd: I heard his name mentioned more than a few times when talking with other drummers.

No ones but Mike mentions Stevie Wonder. But listen to his drumming on those albums of his! Not Weckl-like of course, but great for the style and songs Wonder was writing.

John

John, you never told me you heard Weckl warm up. Next time you go tune Chic's piano, I'll carry your tool box for you.

I sure did,,,a few months ago when we talked about drummers. YOu hadn't heard of him then, then I guess you saw his name somewhere online and it might have sparked an interest, from hearing his name a little while ago.

Ask Iggy! He was there too! smile
