He Wandered © 2009 Janice Hopkins

He’d spent mistaken time in a border town jail
Ran his feet ragged along broken rails
Drank from deep and dark watering holes
Looked near the bottom to find his lost soul

In between….He Wandered….

Never stayed one place long enough to make friends
Moving on soon as the road called to him
Calmed his mind with lost moments in time
Couldn’t remember ever earning a dime

Because…He Wandered…..

He saw the stars and moon more clearly than most
On the path jagged that his youth had chose
Saw the cities and the cold barren ground
Stopped looking back at what can’t be found

As he Wandered….

He’d been apart of things that he couldn’t feel
Stood by a circle not knowing what’s real
Then he was blessed in ways he’d never earned
Gave up all greed for the lessons he’d learned

As he Wandered….

He used to see the world thru a thin dusty veil
As his life went on touched his own Holy Grail
Cause in his world he found his own truth
When he let it take him where the fickle wind blew

While….he Wandered….

Where he stopped he gave much more than he had
Even while life was a dangling thin thread
Though he’d been an orphan who’d never been found
He knew a stranger can survive reaching out

So….he Wandered…..

Then he sang, he danced, he drummed life’s desire
Knew he had more than some men by the fire
A struggling purveyor of many men’s doubts
He’d been touched by a source that found him somehow

While he Wandered….

Though a willow bending in turbulent winds
No sainted portrait for those looking in
He was carried by the One looking down
Who paints His love broadly without making a sound

Cause we’ve all Wandered…..

For the Maker has no pattern for men
They’re all as varied as the stars he has sent
Takes so many raindrops to fill up the sea
All wide and deep rivers all flow back to Thee
