Poised for a Fall

I put my courage to the test
And though you know I tried my best
I tied myself and all the rest into a great big knot
I swore and I insisted
I had straightened what was twisted
But I think I might have missed it by a long-shot
Everybody knows, everyone but me
Everybody sees the writing on the wall
How gracefully I stand, poised for a fall

It’s just a tempest in a teacup
It’s a temporary mix-up
And the moment that I wake up everything will be just fine
I keep striving for that one thing
Keep diving into something
I’ll be smiling as I’m crumbling for the very last time
Everybody knows, everyone but me
Everybody sees the writing on the wall
How gracefully I stand, poised for a fall

(bridge)
Oh don’t look down
Another circus clown
Is on a ladder climbing up to the high wire
Oh don’t think twice
Just grab the biggest slice
And maybe then you’ll set the world on fire

Good old Cinderella lost her slipper
I know fate tried hard to trip her
If you see her, won’t you give her all my very best regards
For I’m another one who won’t tread lightly
I’ll be tossing, turning nightly
Synchronized by the lies in my busted up heart
Everybody knows, everyone but me
Everybody sees the writing on the wall
How gracefully I stand, poised for a fall
