Nite,

That's a good question, sir. When writing instrumentals, I start with a mood, then move to imagery. Then I will listen to successful music, that fits those moods and images, for inspiration.

For example, my instrumental catalog was light on modern synth classical fantasy, so I listened to Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and Mussorgky's "Night on Bald Mountain." Then I went to the sci fi channel for fantasy and the PBS mystery Sherlock Holmes. After all of this, I knew I wanted it to be lighter in mood, with texture but not too complicated a melody and a modern touch to it. Finally, I prayed for inspiration and offered my work for God's glory.

The resulting instrumental is called "Through the Gates." You can hear it here, it's the first song, click on it:

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash
