I have absolutely no good ideas because I've been notorious for not remembering lyrics. I just improvise. Several new songs have come out over the years - tape your live shows & copy down the improvised lines. Most of the audience doesn't know the song well enough to realize you just added some new stuff, and those that do think you're really good at adding depth to your music. Just don't tell 'em & you'll be considered a genius. I've heard live tapes of major artists that improvised that way. Never hurt their careers =:-)
