You said you didn't understand the story behind the song. It's about the kind of connection that develops between two people who have shared a lifetime together. At some point, words become almost unnecessary. A glance, a wink, or a lingering look can communicate more than an entire conversation. Whether the song succeeds at conveying that idea is, of course, up to the listener.

As for the repetition, I think we're looking at it from different perspectives. You claimed you listened and every word you heard was "eyes". Well, I'd say you didn't listen very well. The real question isn't how many times a word appears. The question is whether the repetition serves the song. Since the entire concept revolves around communication through eye contact, references to eyes, looking, gazing, and winking are central to the theme.

Commercial songwriting is full of songs built around repeated title hooks. As a songwriter, you should know that. "Let It Be" repeats its title throughout the song. "Born in the U.S.A." repeats its title throughout the song. Countless successful songs rely on repetition because repetition is often what makes a hook memorable.

If your criticism is that the song needs more narrative and less emphasis on the central image, that's a fair songwriting observation. But that's not what you wrote. If your criticism is simply that the word "eyes" appears too often, then we'll have to agree to disagree.
