A good 'device' in fiction is 'conflict'. A movie where everything's going fine isn't very interesting until The Other Man character makes a Love Triangle. (Other woman).
Or until the monster shows up.
Conflict, crisis, demanding decision-making. Makes the story interesting. Ordinary people; in extraordinary circumstances.
Someone asked, "How did you come to write all those sad Songs?"
"I don't know," I remember replying. "I wasn't sad when I wrote them."
They're not biographical. They're just fictions, stories I 'told' in a Song Lyric.
Shortly after that conversation I wrote, "Over The River Tonight", an uptempo love Song that would have been my Signature Song, had I pursued a career in music. It wasn't a deliberate intent to write a happy situation Song. It just happened.
