This is a spontaneous, not ready, unrehearsed, basic, very basic, bare boned, unadulterated, first take of a song that just came by to tug on me last night, and it is not hip hop. It was played with a junior sized "pretty much toy" guitar. I am hoping there is a diamond in this rough. So, be gentle. OK?

Good Old Ways
Doug Buche, © 2012

1st Verse:
C Am F G
The house that I grew up in had a telephone on the wall.
F G C C7
Our black and white television set had a picture that was so small.
F G C A7
We had to take turns watching it, cause there was not enough room,
F G F G C
To watch Howdy Doody, at the same time, or those Micky Mouse cartoons.

2nd Verse:

The air was conditioned by a propeller fan. Man that thing blew so hard.

You had to be careful when you were around it, not to put your fingers through the guard.

Dad’s car had a stick shift on the column and buttons that were not marked.

No CD player, just an old radio. that played best when the car was parked.

Chorus:
C F G
Those were the good old days with the good old ways,
E Am
That made me what I am.
F G F G C
A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

3rd Verse:

Seemed like all my Uncles one by one, made it back from overseas.

From places in Europe or the South Pacific where they had gone to fought for peace.

But they didn’t brag, or talk about it. At least not much out loud.

But we all knew it was serious, and that they served their country proud.

4th Verse:
C Am F G
I remember that mothers of that time hardly ever drank or smoked.
F G C Cm7
You’d see them wearing flowered aprons. Stirring something on the stove.
F G
They were stay at home Moms, cause they had a lot of kids.
C A7
And staying home and taking care of them. That’s what Mothers did.

Chorus:

Those were the good old days with the good old ways,

That made me what I am.

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

Bridge:
Am
If I could go back in time - -
C E
I would look them all up and give them all a hug.
F Cm7 A7
But time is like a tug boat, it keeps on churning, and it’s giving me a tug.
F G Cm7 A7
It’s pulling me a direction, I’m not sure I want to go.
Dm D7
My engine is slowing down, and it’s pulling real slow.
F G F G C
Time to stop talking about walking to school 12 miles through the snow.

Chorus and end:

But those were good old days with the good old ways,

That made me what I am.

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

Hi Doug

Great lyrics and images, I could relate to all of them.

The song has a vintage classic feel to it, a few phrase fixes here and there.
Lots of thought went into the lyric and I can appreciate it.

Mike

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Thanks Mike

I have a feeling that there will be people who know exactly about the things talked about in the song. If they are young enough, though, they might just say "What the . . . . ? Why would a telephone be on a wall or Howdy Who?

With our history, you would probably get a kick out of the "Thank You Lisa for Being Rude to Me", song that is posted somewhere below still. That song has gotten good comment from the younger crowd (in other places than here, though).

I hope you bring out more of the songs like the one you did with your daughter. That was cool.

Doug, I got interrupted during my first listen, glad I came back. I like these thoughts, the chorus works well, I just think you need to sing it often and pull a few of the hard to phrase small words out.

Thanks for listening twice, Pam.

That was good feedback and I appreciate it.
It was a first take so some of the words got jumbled up a little.

When I record again I will smooth it out.

That kinda feedback makes me what to go ahead and do a better production. Glad we got to share that common experience in life.

Hi Doug,

This is strange I can hear your song on soundclick but some other songs aren't working. I can relate; those were the good old days and funny thing is I couldn't wait to get older!

That is an interesting idea. Could that America come back
or would we (or particularly the younger folks) be able to cope without all the technology.

Thanks, Dottie, for the comment and for letting me know about the song play problems. That wanting to be older thing stops pretty quickly doesn't it?

I seem to be experiencing soundclick play problems a lot lately.
It ends up being like that problem with the car that never shows up when the car dealer's mechanic is looking at the car. Soundclick keeps saying no problem, but listeners on the site say they can't hear some songs.

I just checked myself and they do seem to be playing now OK.
I appreciate you letting me know.

Daughter?? what daughter? LOL You mean my young friend Kacey smile

If I had any kids at all I'd only wish they were Kacey and my other friend Julia.

smile Mike

But I will be posting more cool songs, of such variety no one would dare bet that they were from the same writer... smile

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Lots of good images Doug. Very picturesque. When you redo this one watch your vocal phrasing in spots. I'm sure that's because it was a first take kind of thing. My favorite of yours.

Thanks Stevie

It was really just a spontaneous sit down in front of the mike with some ideas in my head and a miniature guitar that I was playing around with. The guitar is not good quality, of course, and it was a first take, so the phrasing was off in places. I decided to post it that way with no flairs or finish, before dong anything else. My second take will be better.

Interesting that of all my songs this would be your favorite. Must have touched you or you had one of the propellar fans also. Thanks for the comment.

Doug
