It’s been most 40 years now since I slipped down to Cutter’s Creek To listen to Ole’ Jackson Kelly play his fiddle and sing. So take a minute or two And let’s go back in time while I’m remembering the sweetest music I’ve ever Heard.
Was just another late spring day and I’s out back trapping around, not looking for nothing. But you never know when you may come upon some hidden treasure that maybe some bank robber hid or something that’s worth a lot of gold…anyways, I’m walking through the woods and down below I can see the creek.
You get a better view of the creek from up here. I saw an ole’ snake swimming down the middle of the water, slittering it’s way like he owned it. And as far as I’m concerned , he did!
Then I came stopped in my tracks…I’s close to ole’ man Kelly’s shack. Ma and Pa done Told all us kids not to go down there ,that this ole’ man was crazy and no telling what he’s liable to do…Now Ma and Pa are my grandparents that raised us 5 girls after my folks passed away…
So now, I lie low to see what he’s a doing, he has an ole bag slung over his back and he lays it down on the creek bank..can’t be a fishing pole, the bags too little..he rolls his sleeves up then sits down..looks around, and grabs his bag up and starts diggin in it.
Man, I can’t wait to see what’s in that bag..he looks around again and to my surprise he pulls out this old fiddle. Then he took out a cotton rag and wiped it down..he looked at this thing like it was a gift for a king..then he sat up straight, put that fiddle under his chin, and with the bow on the strings he looks up to the sky and starts to play and cry.
I’ve never in my life heard such beautiful music, and to hear him sing. He should be on the radio that pa listens to on Saturday night, this man is better than anyone I’ve heard on there…who’d thought way out here in the middle of nowhere I’m seeing and hearing such music…I am honored Lord to be a witness to this. He sit’s there and sings and cries for most 3 hours and I’m paralyzed, I can’t move..I don’t wanna miss none of this…
Then he stops and lays back on that creek bank and has a good cry..wonder why he was a cryin this way..I knew in my heart at this point that this man wasn’t crazy, he was dying of a broken heart..
Ok part 2 tomorrow, I’m tired now

Wow, this is great.. Now I gotta know why he was crying? Was he crying for a long lost love, wife passed away? Was he crying for all the sorrow in the world. What broke his heart? Inquiring minds gotta know, lol.. Maybe we'll never know.

Part 2.....now where'd I leave off...oh yes...fist day of hearing him play.....
He was lying there on that bank, didn't know what to do, felt as if I's intruding on someone's private time that he needed to be alone. But for some reason I couldn't leave him just now, what if he was to pass out or die or something....yeah what if he did, I didn't want to be here iffin he did...but still I couldn't leave...
Wasn't long he sat up, wipes his eyes on his sleeve and gathered his stuff up, looked up to heaven and mumbled something, shook his head and started up the path to his shack...My leg gave way and I feel on the ground and he turned around and looked..I ducked down as far as I could till he turned back around and up that trail he went..
Soon as I knew for sure he was gone I took off running home, just in time to do my chores fore ma and pa got home...
Every evening after that i'd go down just enough to see iffin I could hear him and iffin I did i'd go down and get in my usual spot and listen..i'd close my eyes and pretend he was singing and playing just for me..once I did see him stand up and lean over like he was bowing to the crowd..which there was none but for me and i's so sly, for sure he didn't know I was there.
Ma asked me once boy what do you do every evening out back at the creek, and I said ah nothing just messin around.. And pa spoke up well you best leave that ole' Kelly place alone, don't go near it...man's crazy folks round town say..just don't go no where near that shack..and I say's oh pa..you know I want no trouble...pa said well you better now cause i'll for sure tan your hide iffin you do...so I kept what i've found out to's myselp...
I must have been day dreamin at school cause my 4th grade teacher scared me when she touched my arm ,asked me if I was asleep and I said naw just thinkin..at lunch she came and sat down beside me and asked if I had some problem I needed to talk about...so I asked her iffin she knew ole' man Kelly . She sat back a bit took a deep breath and said...well I only know of what i've heard, don't think folks give him the respect he deserves since none of em' really know him...I heard he moved here from another state..his ma was Cherokee Indian and of course his pa was a white man..Kelly and his wife lived together with his ma, pa and 2 brothers, and they had 3 kids..the girls were 6 and 4, the baby boy was about 8 months.
Well, they had this kerosene cook stove and one of the brothers had poured the kerosene out of the can, she kept on the porch for cooking and put gasoline in it for the lawn mower..
When she went to light the stove it blew up and caught the house on fire..they got her out, but they couldn't hold her, she broke loose and went back in to get the kids...the 2 girls were gotten out and taken to the hospital but died during the night. the fire was too strong ,they never got her or the baby out. All the other adults were in town working...
They went to stay in town with relatives till they found another place to live, it was told that Kelly didn't sleep or eat for weeks and still wore the shirt and overalls with the soot and burns on it from trying to get everyone out...poor man wasn't right since that day...
He don't have no friends and when he does go to town, he has a sack over his back to put his supplies in..everyone makes fun of him when they see him..he acts like he don't even see em' just keeps on walkin..iv'e even seen some of the kids throw rocks at him and he don't even flinch...
Wish I was brave enough to try and talk to him but don't want to spook him off, this music is too good, he may never play again iffin he knows someone is watching...so here I come to listen to Ole' Kelly's heart sing....
ok, i'll be back later and begin part 3......
****note ***** the part of the fire and his ma being cherokee is true, in the exact order it was written, the names were not given, but is on record in the city hall of the town it happened in...the day ole' Kellys spirit and soul died......
thanks for reading my story so far, hope you have enjoyed..more tomorrow....as my mind remembers.... thanks glyn

Final and end of story...........
Guess I went to the creek about 4 years to listen to ole' Kelly play and sing..and it got to like it was a date set between him and me...bout 3 days a week and the same days of the week...I got to i'd even take me something to eat and drink, like I was going to an outside concert and in a way I was..wish I could take some of my friends alone to hear, but knew this was for me, ole Kelly and the heavens....
once i saw him puttin a fiddle together, he was making his own fiddle..man he was such a smart man..saw him pullin hair out of the tail of his old horse, then sat down at that creek bottom and put that thing together... then in a couple days,he was playin it....man ...if only I could be that smart...didn't get to see him finish making it...wish I could have been right beside him, him a showing me...but again I felt it best to keep quite....
Never will there ever be music like this man poured out into the skies....shame no one else got to hear it..
One Sunday evening we all piled into Pa's old blue truck to go to church and we kids learned real quick to watch the front. If pa was a dippin, and he leaned to his left, we'd all lean into the right...
I was sittin close to the back with my frinds. We like to sit back there and make fun of the others in front of us..
I could tell on the preachers face something wasn't right..So I got real quite and hit my friend next to me to shut up for a second...
The preacher stood there and said, I've got some sad news today, Ole man Kelly of Cutters Creek has passed away...
I sat there for a second , those words ringin in my head..then out of conscience I yelled. Man that can't be..I just heard him sing last week...ma and pa and everyone else looked at me like I was crazy..and I jumped over that last pew, felt my head swimin and my heart was pounding so hard, thought it for sure would come right outta my chest...I could feel my feet hitting that road so hard as I was runnig...had to get to that creek, had to find him...oh God, this just can't be....he needs me and I need him....I never got to tell him....Lord, I never got to tell him.
I hit that slope so hard thought my tail bone was breaking and I sled on down into the middle of that creek..dug my hands into that muddy water as far down as I could , saying, I'm Here Kelly I'm here..............
Don't know how long I sat there..didn't even care if night time came, didn't even care if that ole king snake of the creek came a swimmin...all I could think of was he's gone.....and what was I gonna do now. I felt i'd lost a piece of my heart that day..but I knew I'd always carry apiece of Ole' man Kelly of Cutter's Creek in my heart...
It was gettin on around dark when I finally made my way on home and I could barely see something sittin on a log there by my house... was an old box...I opened that box and my knees went weak, remembering my knees hitting the ground..and I began to pray...Lord somehow, someday i'll make Ole' Man Kelly proud of me...
in that box was a note scribble, could just barely make it out and it was signed with his mark, I reckon...by an X.
It said , boy I wanted you to know that I knew....
and I'm leaving you this fiddle and my songs... and all my worldly goods down to my last dime you go to school to learn to teach others like you , with that hungar of music in their eyes teach them the music of the stars boy, teach them the music of the stars.....
I reached in and got that ole fiddle out, it was held together with tape and glue and sewn with the hair taken from a horses tail.....and his songs were written but with words hard to read and understand..guess he didn't have much schoolin...but these were my hidden treasure i'd been lookin for all my life..
In a glass case in the front hallway of the college I proudly show, right up in front is that fiddle..i've named it "Ole' Kelly of Cutter's Creek...the music of the Stars" ****************************************************************

Fantastic reading, If you have not immortalized him in song then you need to get busy. I and every one who has read this can see the pictures you painted with your words. The greatest songs in the world are not written by the typewriter, keyboard, or pen they are written by the heart. Again great writing!

Well Folks if you happen to wander down this way... Here are the two songs that Me and Glynda collaborated on... We tried to keep mostly to the story of Jackson Kelly from the young boys POV and how it affected the young boy's life. Maybe one day we will do a song from Kelly's POV but I guess that would too tearful to give it justice. I will just say may 'Jackson Kelly' rest well in Heaven. We hope that you enjoy them... Jackson Kelly Sure Could Fiddle http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8842898Jackson Kelly - After He Died http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8992304 thanks and God Bless Roy and Glynda

Hi Glyn! Wow! I can't put that book down. Did you ever think of writing a novel involving this true story? It would be awesome! Jackson sounds like my kind of people. Wish I could have heard him play! -Dave

Hello Dave, well i'm so happy you enjoy ole' kelly's story so much,I should do a full novel on him, but for right now, being off sick, this is bout as much as I could muster up for now. Once i'm feeling better and get back on my feet, I'll start in on a full story of him and his life and how I saw him so differently than all the others in town....I was honored to see the heart inside this man....thanks again Dave....glyn

Outstanding job telling the story. Kept my interest all the way through. The two songs are just top notch stuff. The lyrics are touching and the musical arrangements, are totally professional. Is the music Roy's handy work, it's very impressive. The vocals are pure magic.
Well done you 2.
