I've submitted some songs via www.sonicbids.com to a company called Foley Entertainment, inc. www.foleyentertainment.comI've been selected and contacted by Eugene Foley, the Founder & President He tells me, that my songs are ready for the US-market. He have asked me to tell him about my goals for this year 2010 and among other isues I've replied, that I will rewrite and record the best material in my catalog. Now he is asking me to do that, and then post 3-5 songs on a CD with lyric sheets and to keep him personally updated via his personal e-mail along the process. Looking at the website, I think it looks like the company is ok? Now my question to all you just plain fellas is: 1. Does anybody know about Foley Entertainment, inc.? 2. What is the best way to handle this case? Greetings from your silly viking over the pond(-: Ken

I don't know anything about Foley, but the key issue here is whether they want money from you upfront. If they're going to be representing you in some capacity, there's absolutely no reason you should be paying them. They should be taking a cut of what you earn. So, ask for more details. What - EXACTLY - are they going to do for you? What do they want from you in return?

Hi Ken! Whenever I start checking out a company I do a Google search by typing in the company's name and adding the word scam. Usually that will bring up some negative feedback about the company (if there is any). First thing I came up with is this: http://www.ripoffreport.com/Producers/Eugene-Foley/foley-entertainment-eugene-fo-c8bcc.htmIt doesn't necessarily mean they're a scam, but I would proceed cautiously. Best, John

Thanks Andrew! That is what I've intented to do.
John, Thanks for providing me with that link. Funny I never thought about googling. I've read the review and it seems like the busines in US is just like here in Scandinavia. I must add though that the guy do not ask me for money. He is telling me that my songs can provide the way for potential income.
Thank you bouth for taking your time to respond to this.
Ken

Ken,
The problem I have with sites like this is they have no mention of a physical location. If you are not located anywhere, you are basically, no where. A lot of people are doing this same thing. It is a cottage industry. I would be concerned on how they found me, number one. Who they work with, number two. What their track record is, number three.
I am not one that call these services shams or scams or anything shady. But I do know how the music business, at least how it is related in Nashville, and that is everyone knows everyone. These "we'll promote you da, da, da, are generally people FAR outside the industry, and are operating on their own with no real results. Today's music industry is ULTRA competitive and there are a LOT of people trying to do it, very few actually doing anything.
So finding out a "track record" what they have done in placing songs, helping develop artists and writers, would be the most important thing first.
Most of these companies, google web sites, My Space, Face Book, the Library of Congress, etc. and find people that post or register work. And zone in on them.
You always follow leads and hope for the best. But don't be too dissapointed if they fall short. The proof is in what they are, who they are and who knows them.

I don't have any experience with this kind of thing. I did go to the link that John provided and read both the complaint and the rebuttal by Eugene Foley.
As opposed to some of the very defensive responses I've seen by sharks to some of these kind of threads on JPF, Mr. Foley's seemed reasonable and plausible. But I noticed in his rebuttal that he did not counter the claim that the "client" spent thousands of dollars. Only that he had never heard of him. Found that to be interesting.

I read it also. Didn't see the rebuttal. But unfortunately it is all too common in the "dream business."
One thing I found interesting, was that the guy spent money with him for both song plugging AND as a booking agent. They are VERY different things. Kind of like having your plumber wire the electricity in your house.
Either the client had overreaching expectations and the business overpromised.
My guess would it would be quite a bit of both.
One comment does not make a yes or no for the business. I would have to see a little more, but it has all the markings of what we see all the time. Dreamers and their money being long wasted.

Thanks Marc and Scott. I'm in the proces of googling Foley Entertaintment. Untill now everybody is stating that they have been satisfied working with the company. The only negative I found was via the link posted above. Looking at the endorsements at the website plus watching a lot of movie clips from his TV-apearences on some of the biggest stations over there, I'm beginning to believe, that there is some substance. http://www.foleyentertainment.comBut I'll keep on reserching and I'll follow your guideline Marc. Thanks again for taking interrset in the subject. Ken

Hi Ken:
Good to see you posting here at JPF. As you know, Foley is located in New Jersey. Years ago, I submitted a couple of songs to him and got nowhere. (Maybe a good thing for any number of reasons but he obviously has a good "ear" because I've often thought your vocals are ready for the big time in the U.S.) Your guitar play is equally good.
If he is seeking money... my advice would be to look elsewhere. You don't need anyone to tell you that you are good or that you are ready. You already know that! I believe Mike Dunbar here at JPF would be a good place to start in getting advice about your next step... if you are wanting to "test the waters" in the U.S. Music Market.
Best of luck to you, old friend. Give my regards to the "Ramp."
Dave

Hi Dave my best man(-: I am really pleased to hear from you because you in my mind is very eartbound, and because I hope you are remembering my promise to line up with you the day I find the money to get my good self over to you. I've recieved answer from Eugene Foley. No talk about money, he just want to keep in touch along the process. I'll keep you updated.
Sharla, Thanks for your reply. I'll let you know what happens.

That would be my question.
What does a guy in New Jersey know about pitching Nashville? New York, possibly. But since so much of music is self contained in New York and LA, I am wondering what advantage it would be. It just depends on what he promises or can deliver.
Good luck.

Ken,
Glad to do it. My girlfriend's mother is Swedish. So I have an affinity for the Danes,Swedes, and all those other tall blonde Nordic types. She has a cousin who is Swedish and a rocker, Christian Johanson. Wish I could get him to some of these threads.
